Hooking Up: Sex, Dating, and Relationships on Campus. By Kathleen A. Bogle. New York: New York University Press, , pp., $ (cloth);.
Both these books are helpful. Though reaching similar conclusions, the approach taken differs markedly. Sex, Dating and Relationships could be recommended for its opening chapter alone. A challenging and refreshing exposition of sex as an expression of the gospel sets the book’s tone. Arguing that the Bible defines three ‘categories’ of relationship — family, marriage, and neighbours — dating relationships are placed firmly in the ‘neighbour’ category, leading to advocacy of ‘dating friendships’.
However, there is a risk of assuming a biblical example always constitutes a biblical command which I was not fully convinced these categories do. The Dating Dilemma is, on the surface, more supportive of modern society’s view of dating and relationships; current practice is to be redeemed and improved, rather than torn up entirely. It is intensely practical, and also strong on putting God at the centre of all the things we do, encouraging us to date differently.
The theological approach is quite different to Sex, Dating and Relationships , but the underlying ‘answer’ is not so different beneath the very different terminology. Student Conference

Hooking Up is an intimate look at how and why college students get together, what hooking up means to them, and why it has replaced dating on college campuses. In surprisingly frank interviews, students reveal the circumstances that have led to the rise of the booty call and the death of dinner-and-a-movie. Whether it is an expression of postfeminist independence or a form of youthful rebellion, hooking up has become the only game in town on many campuses.
In Hooking Up , Kathleen A. Bogle argues that college life itself promotes casual relationships among students on campus. The book sheds light on everything from the differences in what young men and women want from a hook up to why freshmen girls are more likely to hook up than their upper-class sisters and the effects this period has on the sexual and romantic relationships of both men and women after college.

The church is in a bit of a mess when it comes to sexual ethics, and Christian singles are bearing the brunt of it.
No doubt things could be worse just read 1 Corinthians But certainly we could be doing better. Much better. The hook-up culture, so prevalent on the college campus and now even in our high schools and middle schools represents a sea change in sexual mores from even twenty years ago. Sex has become casual, devoid of intimacy; it no longer requires even a pretense of ongoing commitment.
But the relentless battering of the promiscuity ram against the gates of Christian virtue can exhaust even devout singles. What about oral sex? Passionate kissing?
